Strata / Reflection and The way
These are a couple of my favourite paintings. Monochromatic paintings that made me change my mind about the colour burnt sienna - a colour I had decided was one of my least favourites. No longer! They’re a bit of a quirky shape at 17cm x 38cm, and I think that’s part of the fun. The began as an exploration of what burnt sienna can do, the colours you can make by mixing it with black and white, using a variety of different mark making tools and just playing with the paint. After the initial layers, I worked on them individually. Developing the shapes I found, while trying to maintain variation in the colours I was mixing.
The way gives me so many unanswered questions, who are they, where are they going, are they escaping - it’s windy and possibly raining and feels like hard work. Are they walking on clouds, above the clouds?
And the more abstract Strata / Reflection; so called for me because it depends on which way you look at it. It was painted as Strata but works as a narrow portrait and feels like there is a reflected cave.
